We note that Einstein did not develop a theory Quantum Plumbing. All the same, while you don’t have to be a genius to be a plumber, but you do have to be smart about it. Plumbing is the root of more problems than anything else handymen attempt in the home.

We don’t mind when people think they can be their own plumber. Actually, it makes us feel petty good, come Monday mornings when all those phone calls come in asking us to fix the weekend projects gone awry.

Another Weekend Down the Drain

We see it time and again: a home owner takes on a project that seems simple, say, a slow-draining sink. He reasons there may be something stuck in the drain pipe, so he decides there’s no need to turn the water off.

It happens all the time: what seems a simple home project, say, a slow-draining sink, takes on a downright sinister tone over the course of a Saturday morning. The handyman figures something may be stuck in the drain. No need to turn the water off for that, right?

Then it looks like it might be easier to clean out the pipe if that bulky trap isn’t in the way. A good push with the monkey wrench and the trap fitting gives way – while the wrench handle hits a soldered connection on another pipe, which begins to leak.

There are no threads for a solder connection, so the wrench is useless. The water shut-off valve under the sink hasn’t been used in years and it won’t budge because it’s seized up. Penetrating oil! A quick trip to the garage ought to get this back on track…
